E. John and Thomas C.W. Ellis family papers, 1829-1936 (bulk 1870-1920).

Papers consist of correspondence, legal documents, Louisiana pamphlets, printed items, and business papers of three generations of the Ezekiel Parke Ellis family of southeastern Louisiana. The letters of Ezekiel Parke Ellis to his wife constitute the early part of the collection. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, notes, and documents of Ezekiel John Ellis, Thomas Cargill Warner Ellis and their brother, Stephen Dudley Ellis. Politics occupy a large portion of the discussions in the correspondence and speeches of 1856-1861. There are also broadsides advertising political meetings in which Thomas and John participated. Civil War correspondence of E. John Ellis includes letters written from various camps in Louisiana, Mississippi and Georgia, as well as those from prison camp at Johnson's Island, Ohio. Correspondence of the Reconstruction period pertains to politics, reflecting the struggle to reorganize the Democratic party, conflicts in state government and attempts to maintain white supremacy in the west Florida parishes. Later papers include legal documents, memoranda and business notes of the law practice. Letters of family members during this period are concerned with education of children, marriage, their homes and travel; there is also the correspondence of E. John Ellis while he served in the U. S. House of Representatives. Post-war letters are mainly written by Thomas C. W. Ellis. Bound volumes consist of account books, notebooks, journals, diaries and scrapbooks of various family members. Among the printed items are newspaper clippings, recipes, election tickets, and several unidentified photographs, cartes-de-visite, cabinet cards, tintypes, and albumen prints.
